Check out some of the inspiring stories that have been submitted as part of Our Plan, My Part.
Alec Walters
"One time I felt particularly valued and empowered by my team was during a critical phase of a post-tensioned concrete deck project. We were facing a complex issue where stud rails had been omitted from the slab reinforcement in multiple areas, and the deck had already been stressed. It was a high-pressure situation, but instead of assigning blame, the team came together to collaborate on a solution.
I was encouraged to lead the investigation and interface with the structural engineer, the rebar/PT provider, and the QA inspector to assess the risks and develop a remediation plan. My input was taken seriously, and the team trusted my judgment. I proposed a methodical approach to load analysis, on-site verification, and coordination of corrective measures without delaying the overall schedule.
That level of trust and support made me feel empowered. It reminded me that being part of a strong team means not only contributing ideas but also being trusted to lead when the stakes are high."

"I feel valued and loved every day! One time (safety related).. A couple years ago I was cutting some metal in my shop at home. I was nearing the end of my cut, and decided to peek under my face worn out shield and immediately sent a respectable amount of metal into my eye! Needless to say, this resulted in tweezers, small dremel like tools, and heavy scraping to get all the metal out of my eye.. Once Travis Johnson caught wind of this.. He cornered me, explained to me that i played an important role in our operations, and loaded me up with new safety gear to use at home.. He didn't have to do that.. BUT HE DID! So, yeah.. I encourage anyone reading this who thinks that our safety staff is just here because they have to be to think twice. They really do care, and mean what they say. "

"As a member of the office team, I work really hard to provide robust preparatory meetings for the scopes of work I am responsible for - both the trade partners we work with, and my team appreciate the level of detail I go into for each aspect of the work, especially safety. It really comes full circle for me when I see the real-life impact of the prep and planning that I put into my meetings, and the discussions that it stimulates. When the team moves from the prep meetings into executing the work, it makes a big difference to the crews performing the work that we've done our research, identified hazards and discussed solutions ahead of time, and have involved them in the process by asking for their input on how to facilitate safely accomplishing their scopes. They are more positive about getting difficult tasks done and are far more engaged in the safety discussion because they can see that we genuinely care about their safety and success. Sometimes they verbally communicate this to us as a "thank you for thinking through these issues with us," or they just show us by executing the work safety and efficiently, or even by going a step further by taking ownership of the next scopes and getting a head start on safety planning on their own. The efforts I put in personally snowball into team/crew-wide discussions and then site-wide engagement that shows how we are all valuable, no matter our positions and roles. Watching everyone around me feel included, valuable, and empowered to contribute makes me feel the same."

"The trade partner responsible for taping had foreseen that it would be difficult to access the top of the wall where plumbing and fire sprinkler had already been installed. The trade partner's project manager had thrown his hands up and walked away from the issue, refusing to try to come up with a safe plan to access above the installed piping. The crew on site had flown in from another state to support this work, and was not about to stop work - they were wanting to come up with a solution and had come to me to discuss safe options to perform. They had creative solutions and wanted to ensure that I was bought in before proceeding. A plan was created, and the task was executed safely."

"I was on a large project in Texas building 31 miles of interstate 35 which is one of the busiest highways in the states, I was given a foreman position running a crew of 23 TM’s building bridge abutments and I took their safety seriously as we were working in a congested traffic area with cars traveling in excess of 70mph. While building the project I noticed we didn’t have concrete barriers in our immediate work zone just plastic delineation and with the amount of traffic I thought that wasn’t adequate. I proposed concrete barriers be placed and it went up the ladder and was approved by the safety team, after the barriers were in place not only were the laborers and operators safer and let management know TXDOT actually presented me with a safety award and questioned why it hadn’t been done before. From that point all work areas were delineated with concrete barriers to protect the ground people working."

"It was during our P-661 project that we collaboratively made every effort to bring all the pieces together and work as a unified team, despite operating in a hazardous environment. The project involved working on a POL (Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants) pipeline, which required extensive welding, deep excavation, and navigating wetlands on both sides. Despite these challenges, we successfully completed all pipe tie-ins with zero accidents—an achievement that reflects our strong coordination and commitment to safety. We made outstanding CPARS because of this project."

Having time to develop these tight knit relationships with our team is something that is essential for the trade partners on site as well. "wanted to share a recent experience where I felt empowered at work, even though it involved delivering difficult news to an employee. As part of my role, I had to inform an employee about a significant change that would impact their position. Understandably, this was a tough conversation to have.
Despite the challenging nature of the discussion, I approached it with empathy and transparency. I made sure to clearly explain the reasons behind the decision and how it aligned with our company's goals. Throughout the conversation, I actively listened to the employee's concerns and provided them with the necessary support and resources to navigate the situation.
By the end of our meeting, the employee expressed a greater understanding of the circumstances and appreciated the open and honest communication. This experience reinforced the importance of handling difficult conversations with care and respect, and it highlighted the value of empowering employees with clear and compassionate communication."
